Mayor Devotes Tuesday and Wednesday to Education Summit
Sullivan seeks input on how to increase job prospects for Anchorage school district graduates.

City of Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan tomorrow is rolling out the first of three steps in his initiative to improve Anchorage public schools.

Sullivan said that while Anchorage students usually perform above average in terms of American schools that it may not be good enough to compete with students in other countries who have been subjected to higher academic standards. He hopes to raise these standards in Anchorage in order to help prepare graduates to compete on an international level for jobs.

This week, The Mayor’s Education Summit will bring together about 100 leaders in the Anchorage community--including KTVA reporter Corey Allen-Young--in fields from labor to government to business, to discuss the realities and challenges that face the Anchorage School District, and to lay out possible reforms, solutions, and ideas that can lay out a new path for success.Two more steps in the process lie ahead in Sullivan’s plan: Community Dialogues will follow in February 2012, and the final step, the Capstone Summit, will come in June 2012.
