Mayor Addresses Sidewalk Ordinance, Occupy Anchorage and Education SummitBill McAllister sits down with Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan in this week’s installment of View From City Hall.
Sidewalk Ordinance
-Anticipates ordinance to pass -Sidewalks intended to be unobstructed walkways. Ordinance designed to protect the sidewalks and safety -Intent is to be proactive and not wait until it becomes a problem -Believes ordinance, if/when passed, would be rarely used, but is an important tool to make available to law enforcement -Says homeless sidewalk protester John Martin III has become the face of the sidewalk protesters, but ordinance is not directed at him -Similar ordinances have been passed elsewhere in U.S. Occupy Anchorage -Mayor’s administration and police have had a “good relationship” with -Occupy Anchorage protesters -Have had to fill out permits like any other group to have exclusive access to public property Education Summit -Nationwide trend for mayors to get more involved in school district matters, at the request of constituents concerned about return on investment -Perception and reality that the amount of money spend on education is not yielding an appropriate level of results -In 1999/200, Sullivan says ASD budget cross the $400 million mark—decade later, budget has reached $830 million with fewer students than 1999/2000 levels -Wants Anchorage students to be more competitive with high-achieving countries like Finland -Goal to achieve “amazing results” -Says introducing outside party to observe is a “healthy” process; like an audit -Chance to have a new set of eyes look at structure and procedures, as well as recommend improvements ASD Budget -Construction of several new schools contributed to increase in spending -Summit will comprise of about 100 people from the community (unions, ASD employees, school board members, university personnel, teachers, parents, students and business community members) -Businesses have expressed frustration with high school graduates upon their entry into the workforce -Say recent grads require retraining to perform basic tasks -Need to elevate the profession of teaching -Cites tenure and unions as roadblocks in educations, difficult to fire bad teachers -Invites teachers to be a part of the discussion in revising approach to education |

This is about the mayor's ego... Why work at getting the snow out of Anchorage when you can waste your time passing a 'vanity' ordinance. Under Begich the sidewalks were done within 36 hours. Double or triple that time and you have Mayor Dan Sullivan's vision for Anchorage. If I was in a room with a conservative and a liberal and I only had one bullet...I'd wait for the 'alignment'. As for you Danny boy.. You had your chance.. you blew it

While I dont like John Martin sitting on our city side walks making it look dirty, he is under watchful eyes. He is also a registered molester from my understanding. I do however think those protesting Wall Street are doing a good thing. Our Govt should not be for sale and business should stay out of govt or govt should stay out of corporations. The rich are getting richer off the backs of the middle class and the poor. If I could be out there protesting with them I would but I am disabled. This city is letting the homeless run this town. Their drinking and causing other problems needs to end. Sending them repeatedly to sleep off needs to stop. Take their tents force them out of these camps. They are a danger to themselves and others put them in a state hospital to dry them out. In the long run this will cause less damage and money than drying them out even if by force. Im am tired of being asked for money when I go downtown, scared for my safety and that of my kids. ANCHORAGE SUCKS!!

Bet the majority of these protesters are jobless, homeless, on state aid or stamps, contribute NOTHING in society. All these bums want something FREE, think they are right in demanding "ENTITLEMENTS", they should be sent to some 3rd world country and see how long their protests work there. They are lazy, liberals or just uneducated morons wanting to caouse trouble. Pass laws to get rid of them. Short non-violent protests for a day is fine, but this long drawn out sitting on the streets tax payers have to support is just way out of line!
