Mandatory UAA Student Meal Plan Still Under ReviewA student senator called the current meal plan "bogus" and claimed students were unwilling to pay the nearly $2,000 per-semester fee.
After student representatives pushed to eliminate the UAA student meal plan earlier this month, school officials said it wouldn’t be happening anytime soon.
A bill introduced by a student senator called the current meal plan "bogus" and claimed students were unwilling to pay the nearly $2,000 per-semester fee for the plan. But rather than eliminate or change the plan, university officials and students alike said they're working to form a governance board to address future meal plan complaints. "And then you can directly speak to the president of business services or parking, so I think a lot of progress will be made in the future. But as far as restructuring the bill so that mandatory meal plans aren't required, that's never gonna happen,” said Matt Caglioni of UAA student newspaper The Northern Light. The university has required mandatory meal plans for students since 1998. |

The bill itself was written fairly poorly and unprofessionally though. I agree the mean plan needs to be changed, but there are better ways of getting through to the admins than by name calling. It also had a lot of grammatical and spelling errors. It read more like a Facebook rant than a piece of legislation.

I do hope there are either a lot of options for those on special diets or some sort of medical exemption. I know that I would have a LOT of trouble eating in a traditional school cafeteria because of medical related dietary restrictions. and honestly, these "kids" are generally not kids anymore, they are old enough to learn how to be responsible for their choices and actions, and if that means they blow their grocery money on comic books, then that's a lesson in budgeting they need to learn.

They require the meal plan because so many were going hungry by the end of the semester, yes its bogus but unless someone comes up with a better way to keep these kids from spending all there money that is supposed to go to food then yea. file complaints until your blue in the face who cares it gets filed right in the trash.
