UPDATE: Tuesday morning APD announced the shooter, 34-year-old James Marques, was charged with first- and second-degree murder after his 47-year-old girlfriend died a short time after Marques called the police and his girlfriend was taken to the hospital. APD will announce the victim's name when next of kin have been notified. Marques is being held without bail and expected to be arraigned after 2:30 Tuesday.

ANCHORAGE - Shortly before 6 p.m. on Monday, a man called Anchorage police and said he shot his girlfriend in the head and needed to go to jail, according to police.

Officials said after arriving at the 42nd Avenue and Wisconsin Street apartment he complied with their orders and was taken into custody. The woman was rushed to the hospital.
