Senator Lisa Murkowski has a new ally in advocating for after-school programs – a New York Yankee, to be precise.

Yankees’ first baseman Mark Teixeira met with the senator today to discuss the benefits of after-school programs for kids all across the country, from Harlem to Alaska.

Teixeira works with the Harlem RBI Program in New York City.

“We’re not babysitters, we’re actually changing kids’ lives,” Teixeira said. “They may be going to rough schools in areas that they’re not getting a lot of positive reinforcement from their community. After-school programs can fill that void.”

Murkowski is the lead Republican co-sponsor of the After School for America’s Children Act.
