Loussac Place Prepares for Re-Opening

Loussac Manor was torn down over a year ago to make room for the new improved establishment

ANCHORAGE - An Anchorage housing project that was torn down more than a year ago is getting very close to being rebuilt. Cook Inlet Housing said it is being flooded with applications for the first eight units, opening in June.

Loussac Manor, as it was once called, was a 62-unit public housing project that stood for more than 40 years between C and A Streets in Anchorage. The new complex, called Loussac Place, is in the same location, but is very different from the old one.

For one thing it is twice as big. When completed there will be 120 units. The look is also different. The one, two, three and four bed rentals are all townhouse style with washers and dryers in each unit, as well as a garage.

But the main difference between the two is actually the people who will live there. Loussac Place features a mix of subsidized public housing and rentals to people at fair market value. Cook Inlet Housing, which owns and operates Loussac Place, believes that will make for a stronger neighborhood.

Residents will be carefully screened and required to sign a one-year lease. So far there has been no shortage of people waiting to get in.

“When you open up eight units for lease which is what's open in June,“ said Cook Inlet’s Carol Gore, “and you take in 250 applications for those units, that's confirmation that we have a production issue here and we have an affordability issue here.”

Gore said the units will become be available at a rate of about 22 a month after the first phases open in June and then July. She said people who are interested in applying should do so in person at the Cook Inlet Housing Office building on Spenard Road.
