ANCHORAGE - The Loussac Library may be the site of some major changes in the near future. In fact, if things go as planned, the whole outside of the library could have a new look. It’s part of what’s called the “Loussac Master Plan,” a plan designed to take the library into the future.

Phase one includes tearing down the steps that many consider a hazard, and moving the main entrance from the second floor of the library to the ground floor. The circulation desk would relocate there as well.

But while those changes will be the most visible, there are plenty of other items on the wish list as well.

“This building opened about 26 years ago and there hasn’t been much touched since then,” said Clare Ross, library development director. “So, in addition to making the place more technology-friendly, we need to get new carpet, new paint and new furniture.”

The plan is to work in the changes as funding becomes available. The library board has asked the legislature for $8 million -- plus an additional $2 million that is already secured is enough to finish phase one, including relocating the library entrance. If the money comes through, the work will begin next summer.

For the public to learn more, the library is hosting a meeting on the master plan this Monday, March 18, it starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Loussac Library.

How nice that the building is getting an upgrade. But what about the books. Are they going to upgrade the quality of books house in this library?? Often, I see the library as a hideout for the homeless. I have seen from time to time, some homeless guy bathing himself at the sink or sleeping in the corner. I told the staff but they don't do a thing.

A wonderful idea. It's too bad so many people that use the library have no respect for it. Go in there any afternoon and see how big of a mess people make. You can't really blame the children if they see their parents make a mess, they think it's ok to make a mess and leave it. Anchorage's public library is really nice, but it could be a lot nicer if people took care of it a little better.

LOVE the idea of the entrance being at the ground floor! Much more friendly - and those stairs terrify me!
