Long Winter Makes for a Short Summer

Many Alaskans are wondering when summer will arrive

ANCHORAGE - Many Alaskans are wondering when summer will arrive. Anchorage residents survived a winter with record snowfall and now feel they deserve to be compensated with some warm sunny weather.

“I'd like to see it clear up because summer is so short, it goes so fast,” said one woman.

“I’m ready for sunshine; I saw a little snow on the mountaintop this morning and that was not good,” said another.

But that could depend on your perspective. Up at the Flattop parking lot, several people were strapping on skis, glad that the lingering snow was extending their season.

“I wish it was a little warmer, but the snow is good,” said skier Anthony Larson, who was heading to a peak near Flattop.

But regular trail hikers may find the situation a little daunting. Many of the paths that are normally clear of snow this year are not. And some wonder whether some trails will thaw at all.

“I like to ride my mountain bike over Power Line Pass into Indian,” said longtime hiker Terry Barr.
“I don’t know if we will be able to do it this year because of the snow.”

The cool, wet weather is also having an effect on local produce. Duane Clark with the Central Farmer’s Market was doing a brisk business selling fresh eggs, but said many of his customers want more.

“Folks are coming in and asking me for the greens. Where's the greens? Where's the greens? We don't have them yet.”

Farmers say the planting season was a bit delayed this year but the bounty will come... possibly a week or so later than usual.
