ANCHORAGE - Anchorage's LGBT community cheered today's statement by President Obama in favor of same-sex marriage.

Although there is no immediate legal effect from the president's change of heart, this was good political news for local gay rights advocates - especially after their defeat in the April 3 municipal election.

Anchorage voters rejected an initiative to add sexual orientation and identity to the protected classes under the anti-discrimination ordinance.

The president had said his position was evolving, so today's statement was not entirely a surprise.

"We're hoping that now he has officially endorsed it that other states will finally come along and either repeal their constitutional amendments, like we have here in Alaska that was accepted in 1998, repeal those amendments and hopefully move forward in a more progressive manner," said Felix Rivera, co-chair of Alaska PrideFest.

For gay marriage to become legal in Alaska the legislature would have to approve a constitutional amendment by a two-thirds vote of both houses, with ratification in a statewide general election.

The man was always for this...he changes only to get votes or money. Typical...will promise anything to get people to vote for him and his party...promised to cut the deficit in half, still waiting for that...hope our grandkids are ready to pay for all his promises

Gotta ask an Alaskan question folks...Bristol Palin is ranting in the lower 48 about the President...ok.. but didn't Sarah Palin say she has many gay friends? so if that is common knowledge - what gives with the Bristol Brat of the North? lol..had to throw that in!

So, the soon to be ex President is for gay marriage. With the amazing speed that everything else got passed thru the system, I wouldn't get my hopes up just yet.

When Dick Cheney announced his support for gay marriage in 2009 there was no reaction from the LGBT community. I guess it only counts as support if it comes from a democrat.

LOL...he was forced to finally make a statement because Biden opened his mouth. That and he had a lot of major money donors that were threatening to withhold their money unless he came out and spoke out in favor of gay marriage. Everyone knows what Obama believes. Its no big secret. There was no big fuss when he was against it in 2008, because everyone knew he was just posturing. It is the same now.

Wow 2/3 vote in both houses and a ratification by a statewide election. We might just be the last state to accept that marriage is a state's right that should be equally given. After all, we embarrassed ourselves with last election when we couldnt even put the GLBT community under the discrimination umbrella.
