RABBIT CREEK - A family in Rabbit Creek remains on high alert after a trio of brown bears attacked and killed their pet llama.
For more than thirteen years, Ande, a llama, has been part of the Gribbon family.
“He was such a nice llama, didn't have bad habits, like spitting on people,” said Shannon Gribbon.
But sadly, Ande's life was cut short after a brown bear sow and its two cubs killed him.
“Normally a llama would make noise if there was a bear around, nobody heard any noise,” said Gribbon.
Shannon Gribbon and her husband Mike woke up Sunday morning to a sow that he videotaped running away from their two-acre home near Rabbit Creek Road.
When they returned, they found Ande had been killed. Hours later, the Gribbons say a 250-pound cub came back.
“It started digging where the llama had been, and was pretty agitated when it couldn't find it, “ she said.
She said it started charging at nearby drivers, and that's when her husband shot the bear with a rifle, and killed it.
He immediately called police, and at the same time a third brown bear showed up but police scared it off.
Since the attack, they’ve been on high alert.
Jack Heesch, a family friend has been on guard to help prevent another attack.
