Largest Caribou Herd in Alaska Declines Five Percent Since 2009 (with photos)ANCHORAGE - The largest caribou herd in Alaska, the Western Arctic Hood, has declined five percent since its last census in 2009, according to the state Department of Fish and Game. The herd now numbers 325,000. The herd's number peaked in 2003 at 490,000, the department said in a press release. The herd is spread over a 140,000 square mile area, with about 40 communities and 13,000 people in its range, which goes from the Arctic Ocean to the lower Yukon River and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.
