ANCHORAGE - A carved eagle that was stolen from its maker was recovered Monday night in Anchorage.

Anchorage police were called to a home where a woman in the house said the artwork had just been dropped off.

Police are pursuing two suspects, but no one has been charged.

Why someone would steal a wooden eagle, with a wingspan of more than 6 feet, is baffling to artist Jordan Anderson.

"I knew they weren't going to get away with it because if you were to steal something like that and put it inside, you can't have anyone over, because everyone knows my work,” said Anderson, who has a workshop on Mile 100 of the Seward Highway.

Early Sunday morning, on his way to deliver the eagle to a tourist business on Fifth Avenue, thieves took the artwork out of Anderson’s truck.

"I got out of Lowe's, and I didn't even look in the back or suspect the eagle was stolen,” said Anderson. “I got a minute down the road, and looked in the back, and I was like, 'what, it's gone?' and then I noticed that my chainsaw was gone too.”

The 26-year-old didn't want to wait for his eagle to be released by police, so he created another one.

On Tuesday afternoon he delivered it to his client.

"Feels good to get this job done"

Anderson will get the first eagle back from police on Wednesday morning.

You would think they would steel something of value, not trash.

Maybe he should take a carving class or two, the neveryone would know his work. Sounds like someone was helping him bring it to the dump.

Hey Bob, just because both you and I do not know this talented man's work, or even who he is, does not mean that he is not well known already. I personally am not an art collector, or go out of my way to find carvings, paintings, and would not be surprised if I did have friends that were into that kind of stuff, that would know this guy by some type of association. Just because me, you, or anyone does not appreciate art does not disqualify him as being well known in some circles that both you and I do not run in. Don't be so ignorant with comments that are not well thought out and and come across as rude and insulting. This is a great story to highlight morals of wrong conduct in this city, as well as appreciate artwork that does take a lot of time and love to create such a piece for a paying customer, if that were for me I would be dissapointed too that someone stole it for that price and nice work done. Good job KTVA on bringing this to the public, shame on the thief or any thief....

Maybe "Maybe" is not sure the whole point of this story. It is about integrity and respect. Who the hell can be so special to go around and just take off a significant piece of art, and not pay the price for that act that is criminal? It needs to be put in the public to set an example of what not to do in this town that should have some order. What if it were your own? Carving is part of the Alaskan culture. We see beautiful artwork in the totem poles, in baleen baskets, in ivory carvings, in wooden carvings, in stone, and bones, and that art is ingrained in every inch of this state. It does not matter who is famous or known, it is only a matter of time when one individual may get that privilage to grow in talent to become well known not only in circles of family and friends, grow in stature as humility brings honor for one to grow in as he/she succeeds by doing what they do best whether it be carving, painting, sewing, or any craft that can be done with your own two hands and WORK!!!!
