Knik Glacier Plane Wreckage Identified

ANCHORAGE – Wreckage found near the Knik Glacier belonged to a military cargo plane that went down almost 60 years ago, killing everyone on board.

U.S. Air Force Captain Jamie Dobson today confirmed the plane was a Douglas C-124-A Globemaster II that took off from Washington and crashed on Gannett Glacier on November 22, 1952. All 52 people aboard died in the crash.

While the wreckage was discovered shortly after the plane went down, it disappeared into the glacier after two unsuccessful recovery attempts. Earlier this month, it reappeared, discovered by an Alaska National Guard helicopter after the glacial ice carried it 14 miles from the original crash site.

Some human remains were also found in the area, but because of the sheer number of plane crashes and missing people in Alaska, Air Force officials said they would need to use DNA tests to confirm the remains are associated with the 1952 crash.
