ANCHORAGE - A judge has ruled in favor of the city when it comes to a contract dispute involving union workers at the Anchorage Water and Waste Utility (AWWU).

The matter went to court after the Anchorage Assembly rejected an arbitrator’s ruling that said union workers at AWWU were underpaid and deserved bigger raises than the city was offering.

Mayor Dan Sullivan said he’s pleased that the judge saw things his way.

“His ruling clearly establishes that the municipal position is the correct interpretation of the code, which is that when the assembly rejected the arbitrators decision it allows us to either impose our last best offer or continue negotiating,” said Sullivan.

The mayor said the city is still deciding whether to continue with negotiations or force the last best offer.

Sullivan said if they do decide to go with the last offer it would save the city about $2.5 million over what the union was asking.
