There are 2,400 new graduates from the University of Alaska Anchorage, but what does the job market look like for these new grads?

Despite an unemployment rate of seven percent, officials at the UAA Career Services Center said the outlook for graduates is pretty good.

Employers across the state and country are pushing jobs in the university in an effort to hire students while they are still in the classroom.

These days more students are preparing themselves before they walk across the stage at graduation by going to job fairs and putting out resumes.

“I used to have students who might come in here and say, ‘gosh, it’s taken me three months to get a job.’ I don't remember the last time I had a graduate come in here and say, ‘I can't find a job,’” said Lindsay Lockard, assistant director of Career Services Center at UAA.

Plus, state economists said college graduates make the workforce and wages competitive with more trained people.

“It also gives the state an opportunity…the more educated, trained your workforce is, the more likely your economy is going to be successful as well,” said economist Neal Fried.

Fried also said that high school graduates shouldn't have much trouble finding jobs but their success will depend on their quantity and level of training.
