Kodiak Resident Sue Jeffrey Appointed to Alaska Fish BoardShe would be taking the seat held by Kodiak resident Mel Morris, owner of M&M Marketing, who has served on the board since 2003.Long-time Kodiak resident Sue Jeffrey has been selected by Gov. Sean Parnell to join the Alaska Board of Fisheries for a three-year term beginning July 1. The governor announced his picks on Saturday.
She would be taking the seat held by Kodiak resident Mel Morris, owner of M&M Marketing, who has served on the board since 2003. The main role of the Board of Fisheries is to conserve and develop fishery resources around the state. To this end the board is given the power in Alaska statute to open and close fishing seasons and areas. It also sets harvest levels, quotas and bag limits, and can determine methods of how fishing is done. The governor’s announcement touted Jeffrey’s direct fisheries experience through commercial salmon fishing on her family setnet site on the west side of Kodiak, as well as subsistence salmon and halibut fishing. He also pointed to her public service experience. Jeffrey is completing her second term on the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly and is the borough’s representative to the Kodiak fisheries advisory committee. She is also a cofounder of the Kodiak Maritime Museum. Jeffrey was a fisheries editor and reporter for the Kodiak Daily Mirror and has gone on to write and edit for several other fisheries publications. Jeffrey said the seat on the Board of Fisheries wasn’t a position she sought, but when asked to put her name into the nominating process, she decided Kodiak needed to continue to have a voice on the statewide board. “I believe in a fair public process,” Jeffrey said, with the No. 1 priority keeping the state’s resources sustainable. She also knows how contentious fisheries issues can be when people’s livelihoods are at stake. “It’s a balancing act between utilizing and protecting the resource for future generations,” Jeffery said. Further, she said, it’s a balancing act between all of the different user groups, including sport, guided sport, commercial, subsistence and personal use fisheries. Reappointed to the board are Bill Brown of Juneau and John Jensen of Petersburg. The governor’s appointments to the board of fisheries are contingent upon confirmation of the state Legislature. |
