Is IM Testing On Its Way Out Of Anchorage?Despite voting to end vehicle emissions testing nearly a year ago, the inspection and maintenance exams are still required..
For years, the Anchorage Assembly went back and forth on whether to stop emissions testing.
Then last May the body finally settled on getting rid of the exam. However, now the issue is in the hands of the Environmental Protection Agency. “We have a March 2012 deadline that we [EPA Region 10] need to meet,” said Mark MacIntyre, U.S. EPA spokesperson for Region 10. “But at the same time we need to respect the technical part, the legal part and then the public part of the rulemaking process. People get to comment on our decision and then we need to take those comments to heart.” The EPA says the process is complicated especially considering that carbon monoxide inspection and maintenance is at issue. Once the decision is made, the EPA says it can't control what happens next. “How Alaska then deals with that information and how quickly they work through with whatever process they have, I have no way of telling,” MacIntyre said. So how does the process move forward? Diane Ingle, director of the Department of Health and Human Services says, “What will happen, is once EPA gives its final approval that we can end the program then the ordinance and the municipality, pad allows for a 6 month discontinuation process.” For those who have to dole out at least $100 in fees, the program's end can't come soon enough. “I am sympathetic to that as a person. The reality of it, however, is that we are obligated by the federal government and the state government to run this program until it comes to its legal conclusion,” she continued. But that conclusion could be at least a year away. |

You have got to be kidding the IM testing here in anc is a farse they have no idea what constitutes conducting a test. They should be more concerned with what your engine puts out not with what you put in the engine I would have put fuel injection on my truck and improved emissions but they said it did not come with it so it is not allowed. Even california allows you to install it but the weenies up here don't know what they are looking at.by the way we the Tax payer pay for this harrassment it cost us 1.2 million a year to have this system in place it is not self supportive.

Propane and natural gas burn cleaner than gasoline, this is in inherent to the chemical makeup. But, when you convert an old car to burn it, the car no longer passes the "visual inspection" because of the different parts...they don't even let you get to the actual test part. I learned this lesson many, many years ago and came to the conclusion that the IM program is NOT about air but only about money.

Hmmmm, the manager at Quick Lube who declined to go on camera said if the I.M. testing goes away it will cause air problems. I don't suppose it could be because they have hundreds of thousands of dollars of paid for I.M. test equipment and that they make a good profit doing the testing! After hearing his stupid comment, I hope people take their business elsewhere. His NOT raking in the dough does not =dirty air!

Once again, people thousands of miles from our home, who probably have difficulty just spelling Alaska, are telling us how to run our household when they obviously are not unable to run thier own. Just tell'em NO! Alaska.

I had my car engine completely rebuilt. The IM station referred me to a referree station. They wanted every receipt for parts from the engine rebuild. It was a major hassle. Alaska should just tell the Feds to shove it. Not just on IM either. Feds out of Alaska!
