Internet Rumors and Speculation Cast Pall on Koenig Acquaintance (KTVA.com exclusive) - UPDATED with response from James Koenig, Samantha's fatherYoung man named in prior court documents leaving state because of what police say are unfounded accusationsANCHORAGE - Wednesday afternoon, three-year-old Nevaeh Bird sat on an overstuffed couch in the front office of Rex Lamont Butler & Associates law firm. She was waiting for her father, 24-year-old Christopher Bird, who sat conferring with his mother and his attorney behind the closed door of an office down the hall. They had come here a lot recently. After 18-year-old Samantha Koenig was kidnapped from her work at Common Grounds Espresso coffee stand on the night of February 1, the internet came alive with speculation about her disappearance. Police said an armed man took her, and anonymous comments left on published news reports and rumors passed along via Facebook and Twitter began pointing at Bird. Police said they had investigated Bird as part of initial investigations but he had never been named as a suspect in the case. “All you have to do is identify the wrong person and all of a sudden they’re public enemy number one,” said APD spokesman Lieutenant Dave Parker. The public reaction to Koenig’s abduction included a webpage asking baristas to post pictures and descriptions of “suspicious customers” in order to establish a database of potential criminals. The page administrator, who identified himself only as “Ron,” declined to speak on camera for fear of retaliation. While police said independent efforts and unfounded accusations only detracted from their investigation into Koenig’s disappearance, Bird’s name had already been tied to hers on paper several months prior. In November, Koenig had filed for a restraining order against Bird, but she failed to appear in court again and the order was never issued. With the information publicly available through online court record systems, Bird’s name began to crop up on comment boards and online forums almost as soon as Koenig’s kidnapping was announced. Police said it was speculation with dangerous consequences. “If someone were to say, ‘John Doe is responsible for Samantha’s disappearance,’ John Doe all of a sudden is a possible subject of attack,” Parker said. For Bird, it was a possibility with very real effects. He said he moved back to Alaska from North Carolina a year ago. Newly divorced, with sole custody of his only daughter, he had been working as a frontline chef at Sullivan’s Steakhouse and studying at the Academy of Hair Design when he was expelled soon after Koenig disappeared. “[The owner] said he had to remove me because it’s bad publicity; it’s going to ruin his clientele,” said Bird, dressed neatly in jeans and a dark winter jacket. “He was like, ‘I can’t have you in my school, your name is blasted all over the front page, someone’s gonna come in here and shoot up my shop!’” Over six feet tall, Bird leaned forward in the straight-back chair in Butler’s office, wearing an intense expression and a military-style blonde haircut. |

I have this daunting feeling that he (C.Bird) may not have done it himself, some1 who knows him did, w/or w/out his knowledge, in retaliation for something Sam may have said/did that some "individual" didn't like/"approve of". CHRIS BIRD-you have all sorts of violent/gangsta YouTube videos. What do you expect society is going to think of you based off of those(and the R.O)? Is that really what you want your precious daughter to be exposed to: that type of violence? It's rather disturbing. Chris, I hope you've reevaluated your life decisions if for nobody else but for your daughter. It breaks my heart when a child is pulled into such chaos... she's suffering and its not fair. Thanks to her Dad-he has no1 to blame but himself.Sad-(I'm not saying I agree w/the death threats Chris has been receiving.I DO believe he has connection w/the abduction w/or w/out his knowledge. If he does know it doesn't matter whether he was at home or not. Some are just good at lying. The truth will surface.)

Remember: You are innocent until proven guilty. I feel badly for your family, as I feel bad for the Koenig's. Keep your chin up. You do have invisible supporters out here. Keep your kids your priority. They keep you rooted. Also, I would delete whatever internet pages you have for damage control. Especially if you are innocent, which "I" believe you are. The police would've had you in jail with or without bail, if you had anything to do with this. Straighten up your life if you have to... starting with changing your appearance. I dont even know what you look like, but if you dress like alot of wannabe thugs out here, that gains you NO brownie points and society will frown upon you for it. They also will NEVER take you seriously. I comment you for trying to go to school and get a job in hair. That shows some determination. Keep it up.

@Anonymous poster: Your 'daunting feeling' isn't quite good enough reason to post you believe Mr. Bird has a connection with the abduction. As web editor, I was tempted to delete your comment, but it demonstrates exactly what this story is about - rumors and the internet's ability to perpetuate strangers being judgmental. Rapping doesn't make one violent. Most "gangsta" rappers are entertainers, not criminals. Be thoughtful in what you do on the internet - that's pretty much the point of this article. - bjk@ktva.com.

Nothing surprises me anymore. For every action there is a reaction, and playing with other people's emotions, male or female, is a very vile thing. Also i have to say people who portrayed an image or a personality trait up front and isn't the type of person that they really are , you are only hurting yourselves.

Actions do speak louder then words!!! I Completely agree with you 'Anonymous'. @Brendan Joel Kelley- Please, if you feel my previous post is inappropriate or uncalled for DELETE IT! It's not going to change my thinking and many others who feel the same. I will repeat though- I do not wish harm on Chris or any of his family members; I do not agree with any of those who have threatened him. The truth will eventually surface.

Fact of the matter is, CB did something last November that brought this up when Samantha went missing. He has reaped what he sewed. If he is not guilty, it will show. His family getting their panties all bunched up and calling an innocent victim who is god knows where names all over the internet show what kind of people CB's family is. They have lashed out and accused Sam's FB page of slanderous things. Having watched that page from the beginning, I have NEVER seen anything about CB, his family, or accusations against any person in the community. CB's family needs to settle the H*** down, back out of the media, and let the chips fall where they may. The louder they get, the more hurt and anger is distributed in the community. He has said his peace. Let it rest now. If he is not guilty, he has nothing to fear. If his reputation mean anything, now is the day for him to become a better man that would not find himself in this situation. He can rap all he wants; nobody cares.

So anonymos poster, so if this 'acquaintance' of C.Bird did something w/o C.Bird knowing about it, you should condemn him and bring him in anyway? Wish all the mass speculation and inuendo and such, no wonder the Police are selective about the what information is being released.

This article is poorly written to view sides with Bird. She speaks of her "strict" acts, yet the guy blatantly and openly does drugs on his videos with guns and weapons all while even a week before this incident happens gets arrested for hitting a bouncer at a bar. Yeah, that is some "stern" treatment you give him. Quit trying to brainwash people.

Where is this baby's mother? In what court is a guy like this awarded custody? He might be the greatest dad on the planet - and everyone has the right to make lifestyle choices - but these things absolutely make a difference in custody determination. Open drug use? A handgun casually out on a table? Videos with disturbing images of disrespectful treatment of women, dog fighting, smashing windshields, organized violence. "Death threats?" Seriously? Come on. From who!? It's not like this is a well-known high profile family. They have to leave the state? Really. I think Momma Bird is a drama queen looking for attention. And shopping for a publisher for her book...
