Fight Brewing Over When to End Emissions TestingMayor Dan Sullivan pushes to end I/M testing soon; other officials disagreeCity officials are disagreeing over when to end the I/M testing program. In May 2010 the assembly voted to abolish the program altogether and give businesses a six-month period to phase out the testing – that would be from February to August this year. Mayor Dan Sullivan now says he wants to end the program as soon as possible – March 1, at the latest. Assemblyman Paul Honeman, who is running for the mayor's office against Sullivan in April's municipal election, says however, that the businesses needs the six-month period to change the way they run operations. “We structured it so that they have a finite date to work towards restructuring their business model, keeping people employed, and it's important to keep our word and help each other – help our economy and not to do anything that would damage that,” said Honeman. Sullivan disagrees, saying businesses have had plenty of time to figure things out. “I'm very sensitive to the small business owners who run I/M programs, but I think a soft landing has occurred by how long it's taken,” said Sullivan. “It'd be unconscionable to me to have to get an I/M test when the program's already ended, months after the program ended. I don't think that makes any sense for the consumer.” This will be the topic of discussion at Tuesday night's Anchorage Assembly meeting, at 5:00 p.m. Sullivan says the assembly will make the ultimate decision about when the testing program should end.

To Paul Honeman, sorry Paul but we don'd need a "nanny state" -- and we don't need another politician who will cater to unions at the expense of property owners.

Its time has passed...people should not be required to pay for something that is not needed, just to support businessmen that failed to prepare for its passing. Government needs to stop punishing the whole for the errors and mistakes of the few. Assembly, get off our "collective backs" you are not our parents!

The businesses have had plenty of time. Even dragging this into March is being very generous.
