A soldier stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson found dead Monday morning in the garage of his Anchorage home has been identified as Specialist Arturo Martinez.

A supervisor found Martinez’s body after going to the soldier’s home when he didn’t report for work.

The 32-year-old soldier from Escondido, California, was assigned to the 23rd Engineer Company (Sapper), 6th Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Airborne), 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, according to JBER reports.

Martinez entered the Army in August 2008 and came to Alaska in January 2009; he spent 11 months in Afghanistan with the 23rd Engineer Company, returning to Anchorage this past January.

The Anchorage Police Department is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death.
