EKLUTNA - A man snow-shoeing along the side of Eklutna Lake Road stumbled across a body around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The man told police officers that at first he thought it might have been an animal carcass, but a closer look revealed it was human.

Lieutenant Dave Parker, of the Anchorage Police Department (APD), said investigators have not determined whether the man was murdered. “We don't know if there was foul play involved or not,” said Parker. “It will depend on the Medical Examiner's Office to make that determination.”

People who live near Eklutna Lake Road were shocked to hear a body was found.

Kathy Hall and her family have lived in the area for 17 years. "...Very concerning. There's about a hundred homes up in here and it's just a great neighborhood, it's a great neighborhood to live in, it really is. It just feels really safe,” said Hall after she heard the news.

“I go for walks and the only thing I worry about is bear in the summer time and moose”.

APD crime scene investigators and detectives collected evidence until close to midnight on Tuesday.

"In this situation it was a relatively simple scene and they were able to secure the remains and then turn that over to the medical examiners office," said Parker.

The news about a body being found spread through Anchorage fast on Tuesday night, including over Facebook.

Many people in the community feared it was the body of missing barista Samantha Koenig.

The Anchorage homicide unit contacted her father, James Koenig, immediately and informed him about the body.

"They wanted to make sure that he heard from APD that a body had been found and they've been in close communication since that time. As soon as they found that this was a male instead of a female he was contacted immediately,” said Parker.

But Kathy Hall says this doesn’t bring a lot of comfort. "Thank god it's not her but you now this is a dead person and their family has probably been looking for them. It just makes me sick.”

I agree with Ms. Hall's comments said on Wednesday, Mar 21 at 10:10 PM

"this doesn’t bring a lot of comfort. "Thank god it's not her but you now this is a dead person and their family has probably been looking for them..." I hope the person who found the man recovers from his horrific discovery and many prayers for the deceased's family. I am praying that the man did not die of some sort of foul play.
