After several media organizations, including KTVA, posted the story over the weekend, many negative comments soon followed, and some of the anonymous postings were just plain hateful. Some people said the man who was killed deserved to die because they believed he was gay. We spoke with one of the Pridefest organizers who told us she does not think the comments represent how most people in Anchorage feel. “I have never experienced the kind of hatred you are seeing on the website or in response to the news stories,” says Anne Marie Moylan, co-chair of Identity Inc. Moylan does not think of Anchorage as an intolerant city. She says the anonymous posters are a tiny minority whose views are born out of fear. “People who don’t recognize that they work next to a gay person. That they live next to a bisexual person or that they've been treated by a transgendered person in a hospital. The point is that we are everywhere, we are in your community, we are part of your lives,” she continued. If anything, she believes Anchorage has become a more tolerant community over the years and she hopes that will continue.

Christianity...The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree. Perfectly logical.

Equal rights for gay and transgender people have nothing to do with whether we consider their "behavior" sinful or not. The most common Christian (and Jewish and Muslim) point of view is that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. It is also a basic principle of the Abrahamic religions that all of us, male, female, gay, straight, are made in the image and likeness of God. I don't approve of the actions of a great many people, but I think they still have a right to work for a living, pay taxes, have decent housing. What possible Christian, American or human value would deny any of our citizens basic rights to contribute to our society? The recent change of policy in the military encourages me to believe that the anti-gay hatred being spewed is but the death-rather of a dying bigotry. That, at least, is my prayer.

Anytime the subject is something the least bit controversial, that has religious implications, and it is pretty much guaranteed that nut-cases will make bigoted comments under the anonymity of the internet. It is hardly worth reading the comments on such articles, except to see a sample of the seething hatred boiling under the skin of some sad individuals.

My Bible tells me that God loves me, it says He knew me in the womb. Believe me, people are not gay by choice, do you think it's a choice to be something so hateful to some people that they would rather kill you or see you dead. People tell lies about us, we don't recruit children or anyone. You don't choose to be heterosexual, you just are, you don't think about it, that's the way that Gay people are. We don't say well I'll be gay, so that someone can beat me to death and leave me tied to a fence to die or to put tires around me and set them on fire and watch me burn to death. Rape lesbians to make them straight. Jesus didn't say anything about homsexuality, He did say something about divorce what about people who are divorced and remarried according to the Bible they are committing adultrey, why doesn"t anyone say anything about that?!!!! Because you are all hypocrites!

Grow up and act your age stop acting you shoe size for you who are stupid and intolerent learn to accept those who are different. Just learn to live love and respect those of use who are different. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife. The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. -From The Family: A Proclamation to the World

Anchorage homophobes get more media time than the news does. Most of them are "retired" military, collecting additional 13% of salary tax-free, while they nurse from the Federaltit waiting for their second retirement income and eventual move back to the lower 48. These are the yahoos who NEVER saw combat, but think we should send our troops into the mix, want to outlaw abortion (unless their daughters get knocked-up), want to outlaw the poor and put them in concentration camps, and are so terrified of THEIR OWN SEXUALLY "DEVIANT" THOUGHTS, that they use every opportunity to demonstrate how THEY'RE not gay, by vehemently criticizing those who are. The sooner they leave Anchorage, the better!

Some people have brought up a good point about the parade and the laws. We find the answers in our culture. If there was no hatred against Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender people, who needs a Federal to city laws?? African American people fought hard for equality and they celebrate it. Guess what, so do LGBT people because we have had to fight for simple basic human rightsthat many of you take for granted. Many Transgender people want to be what is called stealth and to thine own self be true. When I say stealth, we just want to love, marry and have a family like other straight and gay people. WE DO NOT WANT people to know anything other than Mr and Mrs are good people that help the community and WE DONT WANT you to know we are Trans!!!

Let us pass our equality laws; if for some reason we do end up burning in some form of hell, laws making us equal won't drag you with us. So why are you so concerned with what laws man passes? Just follow your faith the way you see fit and let us be happy. Please.

Here's a thought for those of you who don't like the parade ordeal. Try going to the South (were i'm from) and tell the people there they can't have their African American pride parade and yes, that is a celebration. Let's see how that works out for you. Oh and just so you know, it isn't SPECIAL rights gays want - we want EQUAL rights or the same rights. Nothing special about that. Imagine if you are straight and tomorrow your marriage is illegal. Try getting a mortgage with your spouse (oops can't..not married), how about a joint tax filing or tax break of any kind. How about joint medical coverage. Just stop telling me that I want something special. I don't want anything except equal rights. Also I don't go shoving my "gayness" in public. I don't hang all over, and make out with my partner. There is a thing called class. I've seen MANY straight people with their tongues down one another's throats and that is sickening to me, but hey...they are in love :) good for them. cheers

Most Americans are for equal rights for LGBT people. Most Americans are even for recognition of same-sex relationships (civil unions or marriage)! And hate crime laws don't do anything to prevent freedom of speech and expression, they only have to do with actual crimes, especially violence, that are motivated by hate, like people being assaulted or killed only because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, and so on. You should feel perfectly free to use as many nasty words for us as you like, just as long as you're not being violent at the same time.

We do ask for you to stop your oppression of us. Do you know the definition of the sin of vanity? Vanity is the belief that your ways and manners are greater or more proper than that of others. That includes the belief that your religious or moralistic practices are more pleasing to God. A God that has often moved people to write that we know not what He thinks or how He moves. You call yourself Christians, yet judge others. Did not God reserve that for Himself?

In the end, while the context of our arguments can differ, the roots are the same; one side supports the LGBT community, and the other does not. I personally don't care what one side believes about the other, so long as both sides respect each other. Not just face to face, but in anonymous forums as this can be. I also do not believe that religious texts, of any denomination, have a place in government or government law - because not everyone in this nation shares in one single religion. So, those who happen to use religion as a reason to dislike the LGBT community, please think of more universal arguments to use. Your "God" based ones probably won't get you very far in the grand scheme of things. To those who already use arguments not rooted in religious ideals, I commend you for being more creative, but I ask that you give a reason for your disdain other than "it's wrong." Also, find a legitimate source, preferably a .edu or .org source, which are more likely to be professional.

James, if you have a problem with a parade, don't go to it. It's a freedom of speech, expression, & assembly issue. There are plenty of public expressions of heterosexuality all over the place -- I don't really object to them. But I object to being forced to hide away who I am just because some people can't seem to deal with people different from themselves. I was just pointing out the ridiculousness of your argument. Though of course you are free to use your freedom of speech/expression/etc. to argue it, no matter how silly or illogical it is.

So much of the religious argument comes from a narrow sector of one religion — Christianity — & only some Christian churches — especially evangelicals/fundamentalists (though also the Catholic Church hierarchy and those lay Catholics who agree with them — but a majority of lay Catholics believe in LGBT equality — & the LDS Church). Yet we have now 4 mainline Christian denominations who not only accept LGBT members, but ordain LGBT clergy. United Church of Christ, Episcopal Church USA, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the Presbyterian Church (USA). Then there's the Unitarian Universalist Association (including Anchorage UU Fellowship), some Reformed Jewish synagogues (including Anchorage's Congregation Beth Sholom.) There are representatives of most of these denominations in Anchorage. So why do the Anchorage media only ever talk to Prevo? I challenge you, KTVA, to talk to religious leaders besides him next time issues of religion & LGBT equality come up.

And this is why I became Atheist, majority of all the religious people I know think people who are gay automatically think they have to go to hell, I don't care what that over glorified story book says, if some one is a good person on the inside, then they should be treated just the same as all the others who are just as good irregardless of who they decide to be with or have sex with. If gay people believe in god and want to get married, let them be just as happy as the other people who believe in god and do unto others as you'd have them unto you. That's one of the few parts of that book I agree with.

Stop rubbing our faces in your sexuality day in and day out! It's disgusting!

All I can say is, if God is really the Big Bully in the Sky that you seem to believe in, I'd rather not be in heaven with him. Any god who must resort to threats to obtain worshipers and get his way is not a god worthy of worship. A god who creates me to be who and what I am, and then tells me I must hate who and what I am and condemns me to eternal fire and brimstone if instead I choose to live with integrity as who and what I am -- well, that's not a god I want any part of. Such a god is abusive and cruel -- not a god of love at all. -- But I don't believe that's who god is. Illimitable god has unlimited love and patience to wait for the time that each of us, no matter how alienated, might open to that love, and live by it and through it.

Shawna is right. Being Transgender has been documented in history from about 1200 AD, with the term transgender comming in about 1912. The first medical treatment was for a US Army solider that fought hard in WWII. Since about the 1960's there has been Internationally standardized treatment for Transpeople. Not to mention IRAN of all countries haev lead the way for Transgender health care since the 1980's!! Are they religious, YES, do they have issues with transgender people, NO!! As shawna said, it is more of a living hell than any person can imagine let alone live with. Gay and Lesbian people have also made great strides and contributions to this Nation, no matter how messed up people are. We are just NOW starting to get on par with the rest of the world!!! We are supposed to be such a FREE country, but yet the people that make this world better are the ones the uneducated hate. Some cultures vale Transpeople and they are a gift, others like some people are less than educated!!

Not to mention being TRANSGENDER, we have a different view on many things because we walk in heels and boots. Many have been highly decorated through the years in numerous branches of the armed forces! There is also something called TAVA, it is the group of Transgender MEN AND WOMEN for those that have served in uniform! There's a reason that we of Anchorage's lesbian/gay/bi/trans/allied community refer to summer 2009 -- when the Anchorage anti-discrimination ordinance was being debated -- the Summer of Hate. It's not that most Anchorage residents are homophobic -- but a loud and vocal minority sure is. Jerry Prevo and his allies carrying their preprinted red signs from Jim Minnery's Alaska Family Council that said "Truth is Not Hate" -- well of course it isn't. But the implicit claims -- that they had the truth, that they have no hate -- well sorry. I don't think either of those claims are true of those who carried those signs, or those who led them. The only real difference between Prevo et al. & Westboro Baptist Church is that Prevo et al. say "perverted" instead of "fags" & claim to hate only the "sin" but love the "sinner" -- but "love" in their book apparently includes discrimination, namecalling, and pretending to know us better than we know ourselves.

I see more good deeds done by my homosexual friends, who work selflessly in their communities to improve EVERYONE'S quality of life, than I've ever seen come out of the religious community. Last year alone, the Imperial Court of All Alaska donated large sums of money to the ASD School Lunch Program so that your children can be guaranteed a hot meal at school. We've donated toys and food to organizations over the holidays to ease the burden of financial hardship in this economy, and we award scholarships to Alaskan students (not just gay ones) so they can have an education. I'm a straight ally in the gay community, and if hell exists (and I'm pretty sure it doesn't), I'd rather go there with all my friends than go to heaven with the hateful people posting their vitriol and intolerance. At least I can go with the courage of conviction that I lived my life with integrity and grace, and that I followed my heart instead of a book.

Gay/Lesbian public behavior is the main issue and/or problem. When you conduct yourself in a inappropriate manner in public (gay or straight) you are inviting people to condemn and criticize you. Why? Because you are telling people that your personal and/or private life is their business by inform them about it publicly. You are responsible for keeping people out of your business.

I guess you have your answer. Most intelligent people are tolerant of gays, homosexuals, fagots, whatever (I can use the word as I am one) because they realize my life has ZERO impact upon them. The ignorant ones are intolerant as they use fear as their tool. I don't see ANYONE here - Religious Zealot calling for the ban to ALL divorces - sentencing those who DO divorce to death - as the bible says you MUST do. Their "SIN" is less than MY "SIN", so we'll sweep that one under the rug. ...In a few more years, the issue will be similar to fight for black equality. We'll shake our heads and wonder why this ever became an issue in the first place.

I also find it funny how homosexuals often attempt to indicate that I have some inclination to homosexuality, when I do not. The bottom line is that we all are entitled to an opinion, and I happen to disagree with the homosexual lifestyle. That does not make me a bad person, it makes me a person who has an opinion, which used to mean something, but now only means something as long as you are on the right side of the fence. Semper Fi

@Jay..The Bible is a book about God -- not a book about human sexuality. In fact, the Bible accepts sexual practices that we condemn and condemns sexual practices that we accept.DEUTERONOMY 22:13-21 If it is discovered that a bride is not a virgin, the Bible demands that she be executed by stoning immediately.DEUTERONOMY 22:22 If a married person has sex with someone else's husband or wife, the Bible commands that both adulterers be stoned to death.MARK 10:1-12 Divorce is strictly forbidden in both Testaments, as is remarriage of anyone who has been divorced.LEVITICUS 18:19 The Bible forbids a married couple from having sexual intercourse during a woman's period. If they disobey, both shall be executed.. MARK 12:18-27 If a man dies childless, his widow is ordered by biblical law to have intercourse with each of his brothers in turn until she bears her deceased husband a male heir. Biblical law sweetie..and who is/not going to heaven?? How many "Christian" women cut their hair, wear pants??

James spent his life helping others, if Christianity was his religion I am sure without a doubt he is in Heaven. Hell exists in the mind of the hateful.

A Christians point of view: Don't hate the person, hate the behavior. They still have a choice weather to "particpate" in that behavior, and yes, it's been around since the begining of time.. and God has always judged them, and will again. I think the problem for everyone is this, (including my self) No one really cares what others do in the privacy of their own homes.. we just don't want to see it and you have to admit, the "pridefest" or "parades" all over this county demonstrate the moral break down by how they act, dress, and otherwise behave during these events. Straight people don't have straight parades, because no one really cares. its a private matter between people. No one with any moral value at all talks about their sex life, straight or gay. Just smile, pray and move forward.

Telling a person they are headed for hellfire because they live in what the bible terms 'sin', is not being hateful, on the contrary, that's showing love to warn the sinner of his ways. We are instructed to do this in the word of God, the bible. Now, the attitude with which a person talks does make difference. If you are hateful in your mannerisms and tone, that makes what you say of the word of God to no effect in those peoples' lives. God loves all, this is evident in the scripture verse of John chapter 3 and verse 16, "For God so loved the world (the people) that he gave his only Son, (Jesus, to die in our place on the cross and be raised from the dead) that whoever would believe in him, would not perish, (in the lake of fire, eternal torment, the 'second death') but have everlasting life." God loves all, but to have a one on one spiritual relationship him and go to heaven, you have to do it on his terms. Repentance (turning from sin to God) is needed. God bless

The media and goverment as well as all pro "GAY" organizations always use the word gay to describe Homosexuals. Just call it what it is, HOMOSEXUAL. Why are folks afraid to say the word?

Alyssa, just because something "has been around since the beginning of time" doesn't mean it's acceptable to God. If you really want to know what God thinks about the issue, you should pick up a Bible and read a few verses to educate yourself. Based on the Christian faith, there is only one way for a person to enter Heaven - they must accept Jesus as their personal savior, admit that he/she is a sinner, and repent (ask God for forgiveness). Read John 3:16 and John 4:6. Unfortunately, that means that a lot of "good" people will not be in Heaven. It's not about whether you've been "good" or "bad" like the song "Santa Clause is Coming to Town". Finally, The Apostle Paul, writing by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, declares that homosexuality "shall not inherit the kingdom of God" (I Corinthians 6:9; 10). The good news is that there's always hope...all we have to do is change, turn away from sin, and ask God for forgiveness. That's the wonderful thing about God & Christianity.

Most people are tolerant of homosexuals. The reason they say "hateful" things anonymously is because our PC culture prevents them from saying what they really believe about homosexuality out loud. When homosexuals conduct their daily business in the workplace and do not boast and taunt with their sexuality, no one gets offended. But when homosexuals force the rest to accept homosexuality, that is something different. In other words, heterosexuals don't have parades and marches. So live and let live -and let heterosexuals live and believe as they do and stop demanding EXTRA rights.

To Chris: Choosing a place to live is not just about where your values will be tolerated. Should an Alaskan have to move away from the state in which they grew up or their family and friends just because of their sexual preference? The answer to intolerance is not to run away from it but to address it.

Over my lifetime I have found that the people (mostly men) who are so concerned about the gay issue, appear to be the men who are most fascinated with thoughts of trying out a homosexual lifestyle themselves. Apparently they are very tempted by it. Men who could care less about what other men are doing in their bedrooms seem to be more solidly heterosexual. Just my observation, but I believe that it has been backed up by studies that show that the more anti-gay a man is, the more "brain activity" and stimulation he displays when shown erotic male pictures. If I were part of the Gay Community, I would personally make sure that these studies were printed in the media as much as possible. I predict that the segment of the population that is so blatantly anti-gay would become much more quiet, if only to give people the impression that they themselves are 100% pure Hetero.

If an old person was hit by a car while crossing the street, some quick-witted folks would say he/she wasn't fast enough to get out of the car's way. No different a comment than I see news reporters making every day on television and in the paper.

Actually, Alaska is one of the worst places for homosexuals to reside. The state does not recognize gay marriages, the population is overwhelmingly conservative, and people should not expect any significant changes in the near future. The bottom line: homosexuals should consider making their residence in a gay-friendly state such as: Massachusetts (gay marriage) California (gay marriage) New Hampshire (civil union) Vermont (civil union) Connecticut (civil union) New Jersey (civil union) Oregon (domestic partnership rights) Hawaii (domestic partnership rights) Washington (domestic partnership rights) New York (recognizes out of state marriages for gay people and NYC has domestic partnership rights) In other words, why would you choose to live in a place that is unfriendly to your lifestyle when there are places available that are a much better fit? It's the same as me choosing not to live in Iran where my lifestyle, beliefs, and values would not be tolerated.

OMG! Jay who are you to tell people where they are going after they die? And where will you go being so judgemental? I am not gay, but understand that they are here for a reason. Did you ever think that it was your God who put them here? Don't tell me that homosexuality is devil's work because if you knew any gay people you would know that they are just like you and me. How dare you and people like you make these people feel ashamed of being who they are. Homosexuality has been around since the beginning of time and it is not going to go away so deal with it.

I've read the comments here and through ADN and I have to say that a majority (if not all) of the people commenting hateful things would NEVER dare say those things to your face. I've found that being gay is a lot easier than being a closet hateful person without the courage to do anything besides typing hateful words. Sad but the internet gives people the freedom to say what they would never have the courage to do face to face. I'm not from here and I have to say that Anchorage seems to be less tolerant than what I experienced in my home state. I voiced this before and was given the typical "go back to the lower 48". I don't know if that is the AK response to anyone not in agreement but it makes Anchorage and AK appear pretty backwards and yes; hateful. Don't worry, I'll be moving but not until I'm ready. Gay people are NOT the enemy - ignorance is though! just a thought.

It is sad to know where his soul may have gone. I wish all gays could see where he has gone, because gays will never enter heaven with the Lord. If only gays knew this they would turn from their shameful life style and repent. I hate to see the moral values of America rotting away.

We have many haters here.. It's a sad thing.. So much ignorance and stupidity breeds evil.. I remember quite a while back when a boy was killed in the valley on a snow machine.. And some of the comments were right out mean.. saying the boy had no right being on such a fast machine and he deserved it.. comments bad mouthing his parents for letting him on the machine.. and some comments were way out of context.. claiming that it was because his family lived in the valley and they are just stupid there... There are so many everywhere that suffer from ignorance and prejudices , that they fail to use compassion and in many cases lack common sense and human decency. Those are the ones that we need to worry about.. I truly feel sorry for them.. the haters that is.. Focus on your own lives .. Leave others alone..
