“Hot Sauce Mom” Trial Now In Hands Of JuryIf convicted, wife of police officer faces up to a year in jailRelated Content
ANCHORAGE—A jury is now debating the case of a 36 year-old Anchorage who’s been nicknamed the “Hot Sauce Mom.” Jessica Beagley is the woman who made a video of herself punishing her Russian-born son, which she then sent to the Dr. Phil Show.
Municipal Prosecutor Cynthia Franklin says Beagley made the chilling video showing her pouring hot sauce in the child’s mouth and forcing him into a cold shower because she wanted to be on television.
“And that is what this case is about,” Franklin told the jury. “Jessica Beagley wanted to be on TV and she made the video that the show requested in order for her to get on.”
Beagley appeared on a segment of the national show, called “ Mommy Confessions.”
Shortly after it aired, she was investigated by the Anchorage Police Department and charged with one count of misdemeanor child abuse.
But Beagley’s attorney told the jurors that being on TV really wasn’t the issue they were being asked to decide.
“Sending the tape to the Dr. Phil show may have been a bad decision,” said Beagley’s attorney, William Ingaldson. “It might have been bad judgment and you may criticize her for doing that, but it’s not a crime.”
Ingaldson says the punishments inflicted on the child didn’t add up to abuse, although harsh and hard to watch. Ingaldson says all six Beagley children knew the consequences for lying or acting out at school and Kristoff had done both the day the tape was made.
The jury was asked to take a long, hard look at the tape and decide if it seems like child abuse to them.
If convicted, Beagley could face a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Sorry frustrated, but just because he isn't shown on tape being beaten doesn't mean his form of harsh punishment isn't important. Sorry that to you a person needs to be a certain level of abused to be important. And sorry to the other responder that just because it was okay in the past doesn't mean it was right. And kids aren't delinquents because they aren't spanked or hot sauced, laughing my head off now. That is just some crazy thoughts. My best friend was never beaten, never even really yelled at and he is the most successful person in the city. He had a 4.0 in college and never was close to being in trouble. Gosh he sure is a delinquent haha.

If she can't take it don't dish it. How many adults love freezing showers and eating something ridiculously hot in proportion to their taste buds? Hypocrites. Our water gets freezing when it's on cold and it is based on location a lot of times. I seriously hope Alaska doesn't have freezing water. That poor child. What's more disturbing is the people who are on board with it. I don't care how a child misbehaves there are always ways of teaching and redirecting behavior that doesn't involved ridiculous punishments and harsh discipline. Her discipline implies some strong anger issues and insecurities of herself. Where was the husband? Filming it? Nasty people. People shouldn't get away with this stuff and I hope they will convict all these people who did this nonsense. Just because an adult can handle hot sauce doesn't mean a small child or other adults can. It's disgusting that people are actually taking her side... very disturbing.

I wasn't aware a form of torture was considered discipline? So sad and from someone who adopted none-the-less. I hear people who get rejected based on their religion and people like this get to adopt. Sorry to some responders, but I love my child and don't spank, oh my gosh! I use authoritative parenting and she is the most behaved child of anyone we are around so no it's not "neglect" to not spank, how ignorant to even think that. I hope they take all 6 kids away from her, if she thinks this is okay enough to tape for a tv show, what does she do off camera? If you people think that she can control her anger and doesn't do more than this you are in a fantasy land. I bet this is the tip of the iceberg, she obviously can't handle her anger and has ridiculous notions of discipline. Non-harsh punishments on any child alive, parents just have to commit to it instead of taking the easy way out.

How do you think Russians feel when they read this story? They allow their children to be adopted by foreigners and this is what takes place! Adoptions out of Russia were slowed a year ago because of these types of cases. There are over 5,000 successful cases of adoptions by Americans every year but two or three of these abuse cases make the front pages of very Russian newspaper. As a result of these type of cases all American families adopting from Russia become suspect. I know this as a fact. Father of six, two of which are adopted from Russia. Remedy...Review the adoption agency license of the group that approved this woman as a suitable mother.

Wow! She adopted this boy...who screened that process...clearly she is unfit..torture is not the way to raise a child to be a good person it only teaches him the wrong way to punish his own kids one day. I have six awesome kids..adults now and they will say they have a great non-abusive loving mom

Unless you have a child with the same behavioral disorder from being in a Russian orphanage and neglected, you can't begin to understand what she has had to deal with in terms of this child. You aren't in her shoes and shame on you for judging her. Maybe other techniques have failed and the hotsauce is the only thing that works. I feel if you don't spank your kids for misbehaving you are a coward and don't care how your kids turn out. Now how does it feel to be judged when you don't have all the facts!

A spanking and a little soap on the tongue never hurt anyone. Hot sauce and cold showers are extreme. The problem with most liberal progresive parents to day is they are too lazy too do the job of parenting, and they are to busy pleasing themselves. Then they wonder why their children have no respect for adults the law or teachers.

She really does not need to have these children. The hot sauce and cold shower is not right, but what kind of abuse do these children receive that she did not tape. Taping the act and sending it in to Dr Phil was not a cry for help, she wanted to be on TV. You can go to local church, hospital , police to receive help. Her husband needs to be investigated too.

do your job correctly and you won't have a devil child. whats cute at 3 is not cute at 13 so don't let the child get away with it so young and punish them as they get older, do your job mom and dad and you won't need hot sauce or beatings. this is a side effect of police brutality, hey it's ok at work so must be ok at home. send both to jail!

I dont know about hot sauce and cold showers but a good old fashion spanking will work just fine you don't have to beat a child to get your point across I received three in my life time and I'm no worse off for it and I definitely learned my lesson. When you spare the rod you do spoil the child why do you think that kids are so disrespectful to adults now? People are too busy trying to be their childs friend instead of being a parent, just use good judgement and know when corporal punishment is required which should not be often if you are doing your job as a parent

I am outraged at the footage. Clearly this poor child was extremely afraid of her and she demonstrated intolerance. Jusister taped the act) is abusive. No doubt emotional scarring. This was not discipline-- this woman is a bully. In prison she can pick on someone her own size!! The hot sauce and cold shower maybe debated as a form of punishment but the means she used (tone of voice, humiliation while sister taped, complete disregard to gather the facts) is child abuse.

This is torturous and abusive behavior. Right up there with soap in the mouth, hair pulling, beatings, biting and public embarrassment and humiliation. This person does not deserve to have children, let alone be a foster parent. All of her children should be taken away from her after she is given the same treatment she has given to her children.... including what she did not show on that tape. You better believe she has a very sadistic nature and she needs to be stopped.

I don't agree with hot sauce or a cold shower. That is extreme to me. I don't even believe in hitting. A good quite time/time out or taking away privileges and toys seems to be a place to start. I know of daycares in the South that use the hot sauce method with 4 yr olds and up... with permission of course. When I heard that, I was so glad my son doesn't speak fresh. I also told them they were not allowed to do that to my son. As far as jail time, that's a bit much. Maybe they should make her go to parenting classes and counseling. There are better ways to discipline.

wow,,, really,, I do not condone the hot sauce as a punishment,, I grew up knowing kids that had that done and always thought it wrong, but, They are not traumatized by this. I think this woman needs to learn how to be a parent and to not be a foster parent anymore, but, I do not think she deserves prison. I think at the age of 5 a stern talking to and a time out would have been appropriate. But again,, you have all of these people looking for sensationalism and finding pleasure in the humiliation of others. As for the prosecuter, use your brains and send it to the correct department and let them handle it instead of trying to make a name for yourselfs,, everyone else,,, get a life.
