High Winds Cause Residents to Prepare for the Worst

A wind advisory is scheduled to be in effect until 5 a.m. Wednesday

ANCHORAGE - It's been blowing all day and shows no signs of stopping -- and it's only going to get worse. Southcentral is bracing for a windstorm.

With an unseasonably strong storm moving in, many spent time preparing for the worst. This type of storm usually doesn't come until the winter, but by the time it's finished we could see a lot of damage.

"It could cause power outages and that could cause power lines going down,” said Dawn Brantley of Anchorage's Office of Emergency Management. “If you see power lines go down, don't go near them report them to dispatch."

Although winds could gust up to 100 miles an hour, some homeowners on Upper Hillside said it's not that big of a deal, but there's one thing they know from living in Alaska -- it's better to be safe than sorry.

"When people don't prepare, they have to rely on what the city can provide or the state can provide, but no city or state can be completely prepared or take care of one hundred percent of its residents one hundred percent of the time during a disaster," said Brantley.

The wind advisory is scheduled to be in effect until 5 a.m. Wednesday.

At midnight, there were at least 50 pilots at Lake Hood adding more ropes, tying down their planes, including me. Unfortunately, one small blue and white float plane near the strip had already flipped over. Blowing like the devil! ,
