Group Treks to Fire Island During Low Tide

ANCHORAGE - It was a close call for a group of Alaskans who decided to make a trip out to Fire Island.

Fire crews were called to Kincaid Park Wednesday to assist a group of people walking back from Fire Island.

Every summer, people make the 3.5-mile trek from Kincaid Park to Fire Island when the tide is low.

The group made it to the island safely, but on their way back, it was a bit challenging.

“We just took off running, barely made it, as you can see from my face we struggled to make it through the last mile,” said Russel Dudley, one of those who walked to Fire Island.

Officials from the Fire Department say they don't recommend for people to walk to Fire Island at all.

But if you do, they say to go with a partner and bring a cell phone just in case.

Just post signs. Something like "Walk to Fire Island at your own risk". Then the cell phone would be unnecessary.
