Gay Soldiers, Family and Friends Celebrate Memorial DayThe organization says the discrimination against gay and lesbian soldiers serving in the military continues even with the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”Also on Memorial Day, "Bent Alaska" joined the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network and families and friends in a picnic to remember and honor members of the gay community who have lost their lives in service to our country. Monday was the 43rd annual "Big Gay Memorial Day Picnic" sponsored by the Imperial Court of All Alaska College of Emperors and Empresses. The organization says the discrimination against gay and lesbian soldiers serving in the military continues even with the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Despite that they say Memorial Day is about all Americans coming together. “We have veterans that are here, we have family and friends of active military members. We have active military members here and it’s a great way just to have everybody come together and we all just get to enjoy the day and remember what this day is all about,” said Paige Langit who was at the Memorial Day picnic. It's been 159 days since the repeal of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,” however, the policy and practice of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” remains in place until the repeal is fully implemented. |

a :) to straightvet and whatsnext! if i was to organize a size 9 and up shoe day i wonder how many people would show up. (lol) i am not predjudiced- i have one "he/she" bus BUDDY- but all of this gay-specific-ness, why? we (straight folks) don't show off their normal-ness. we don't make special hats, t-shirts, signs, stickers, etc. ok, there are straght pins, but :) that is describing the shape. we have schools, churches, and businesses. anyone ever hear of a "straight bar?" nooo, just bars where *any* legal age person may eat and/or drink after work.

When an honorable and pure hearted wo/man puts in the uniform of service, they dont then proudly state; "Im a heterosexual soldier, LOOK AT ME!! Regognise me!! Validate ME!!" This is why discrimination if applyed correctly, will keep impure an dishonorable wo/men from seeking to wear the honorable uniforms of our honorable soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. Lesbians and Gays want another wardrobe? Go serve in the coast guard.

Dear "What's Next", It has to be that way. What could be worse than sending someone the message that "their choices in the bedroom" make them ineligible to serve? See, when I was kicked out for being found out as a lesbian. Someone FOLLOWED me around so they could tell my command. So when they were kicking me out, they asked me what I wanted and I requested to stay in the Defense Department so I could still use my skills. I was allowed to. So I am good enough to train, good enough to get the highest marks on my performance reports, and good enough to be a member of the Armed Forces of the mighty United States, but I am not allowed to DISGRACE the uniform wiith my "choices in the bedroom" ? NOW ask what next ya idiot.

Dear "What's Next", we don't care if you recognize us. We figured out that some will trivialize our existence EVEN IF we put our lives out there for you have your opinon. That event is for US and our family and friends. You have your "regular" Memorial Day where it's O.K. to use hurtful slander, and so we celebrate away from your ignorance. I'm glad you don't stand for everyone, let alone our family. Don't mention it. We served for you, we celebrated for us, and some day we might be looked upon kindly for protecting your constitution. Go be a moron at your own memorial day where everybody is perfect just like YOU.

What's next.....veterans who ride bicycles in the rain, veterans who prefer red heads without freckles instead of with...this could go on and on! This is such a small percentage of our military community (and of our society in general) to justify a "stand out" event in order to draw added attention as if honoring them for being present or active veterans isn't notable enough...they want to be recognized for their choices in the bedroom as well!?!?!?!

Thank you for this story. On this Memorial day, LGBT soldiers, airman, sailors and marines celebrate their freedom of expression on http://OutMilitary.com - the newly launched gay military social network. Silenced until now, Out Military is providing a supportive environment for friending, sharing and networking between gay active military, vets and supporters.
