Gas Rises 50 Cents in Two Months

Residents think about manpower instead of horsepower

ANCHORAGE - The price of gas in Anchorage is around $4.25 a gallon, an increase of 50 cents from just two months ago. With costs increasing residents are thinking more about manpower than horsepower.

“I'm going to go purchase a bike and hopefully get around by bike this summer, maybe bike out here and play some frisbee golf we like to play and hopefully save some money by getting bikes,” said Robert Kelso.

Spring breakup means the streets, and sidewalks are finally clear and people can start thinking about alternative ways to work.

“I live close to the trails so it's easy for me to hook up on the coastal trail and ride my bike straight to work downtown, so it's nice,” said Automme Circosta who rides her bike to work at least once a week during the summer.

The warmer weather also makes it more tolerable to wait for the bus.

“In the winter you're like, please hurry up bus. But if you do it right you can get it almost exactly on time and at the right points of time and it's easy,” said frequent bus rider Avanell Borgstrom.

Riders said they’ve seen more people using the bus to get around town and said gas prices are likely a factor as well. It seems most people are looking for a way to cut their commute costs.

“With the way jobs are now you're not going to get that equal raise for how much gas prices are going to go up so it's something to consider whether you get a bike or something else, any way that can save you gas,” said Kelso.

The latest AAA report shows gas prices may have peaked for the season. The national average is expected to be around $3.92 this summer. In Anchorage prices are always higher so drivers can expect to pay around $4.20.
