Native corporation employs Russian tanker to haul fuel through ice

Help may be on the way to bring much needed fuel – nearly one and a half million gallons – to an ice-encrusted Nome.

The Sitnasuak Native Corporation is employing the efforts of a Russian tanker that will break through the ice to deliver up to 1.5 million gallons of diesel, home heating fuel and gas.

The vessel, chartered by Vitus Marine, hopes to depart Russia this week, on its way to South Korea, where it will be supplied with fuel. From there it travels to Nome, where it should reach its destination later this month.

According to greencarreports.com, Nome residents are already paying $5.98 for a gallon of gas. If fuel were to be flown in that would add 3 to 4 dollars to the cost of every gallon, pushing the price to nearly $9 a gallon.
