Chief Clarence Alexander is back home in Alaska after receiving a special award— a Presidential Citizens Medal.

The second highest civilian honor in the nation was awarded to Chief Alexander at the White House Thursday for his work with the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council.

He founded the council in 1997, joining forces with 69 other tribal governments from the area to keep the river clean.

Now, he says it was that same feeling of support that made the award all the more meaningful.

"My family was down there also so that made it much easier; I was just all tickled. I have reason to smile," he said.

In 2004, Alexander was awarded the Ecotrust Indigenous Leadership Award for the same work.
