ANCHORAGE - A former Anchorage Assembly member has admitted he made a mistake by failing to register as a lobbyist, a mistake that will cost him nearly $12,000.

The Alaska Public Offices Commission has agreed to settle a complaint filed against Dan Coffey. The complaint alleged that Coffey acted as a lobbyist in 2011 and 2012 without ever registering as one. Also, that Coffey failed to file necessary reports and made improper donations to 20 legislative candidates outside his district.

In the settlement, Coffey acknowledged that he should have registered as a lobbyist and agreed to pay one of the highest fines the A.P.O.C. has ever levied. The agency could have asked for an even higher fine, but noted that Coffey had cooperated with the investigation and that his failure to register was based on his misinterpretation of law and not a deliberate attempt to defy it.

In addition, the 20 legislative candidates that received a total of $7,500 dollars in inappropriate donations from Coffey will be required to pay those back to him.

He is a lawyer and he can't get the paperwork right...seems they need to re-evaluate the paperwork and simplify it.

Not corrupt, just mistaken. If he were corrupt, he would have fought this tooth and nail I think.
