Food Needed for Holiday Season AssistanceBean's Cafe needs 1,200 turkeys in next two weeksANCHORAGE - As fall turned to winter, attention turned to homeless residents of Anchorage. But shelter is not the only need that isn't always being met in the dark and cold. With Thanksgiving just two weeks away, there's a gap in food for the hungry. Bean’s Cafe has about 25 turkeys in its freezer. It’s going to need at least 1,200 in the next two weeks. Staffer Ken Miller said, "What we found out is our numbers have gone up considerably, and we also have added three different locations, also to just not Bean's Cafe, to feed individuals, in this community. We’ve added this year Mountain View, Muldoon and also the Palmer area as feeding sites for this holiday giving season and holiday food season." Bean’s needs turkeys, hams, cranberry sauce, fresh fruit and more, and is also looking for volunteers. But Miller has confidence about the generosity in Anchorage. "A lot of times all we have to do is ask, and the community's been tremendously supportive, as long as we make the ask. If they don't see or hear about the need, it's difficult for them to make that emphasis to go down and maybe purchase a turkey or to get on-line or send us a check or drop by something to Bean's Cafe." Meanwhile, the United Way of Anchorage has issued its third annual guide to holiday giving and volunteering. Vice President Sue Brogan said, "Not only does it have volunteer opportunities but it has a listing of all of the agencies that are looking for help this holiday season and actually all year long, so we're not just promoting one specific area." Brogan said Anchorage has rated among the top American cities in volunteer hours per capita. "We are living in a very generous community, so we're hoping that through our efforts and the efforts of many other nonprofits in Anchorage that everybody will be motivated to do something." The need is great, but so is the potential for meeting it.
