Devastating flood waters continue to affect the community of Crooked Creek on the Kuskokwim River, as about 70 percent of the community is under water tonight.

The Kuskokwim flooding has hit the community harder than it has in years and high water levels have destroyed at least 24 homes in the area.

Crooked Creek has about 137 residents, 53 of which have been evacuated to the nearby Donlin Creek campsite.  The remaining residents have been moved to higher land.

The water began rushing into the community yesterday morning, and because of the severity of the high water levels, the true extent of damage is still unknown.

The State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has been coordinating relief efforts from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, where multiple agencies are working to keep the community safe.

As of now, Crooked Creek is the only Alaskan community being impacted by the spring flooding.
