Every aircraft in use are required to have an annual overhaul and pass inspection.

houston3610,mechanically sound and aesthetically pleasing can be two different things. Judging by appearance isn't good reasoning. If you aren't a certified aircraft mechanic, you probably don't know what you're talking about. Also, a lot of the aircraft you see from the road at Merrill Field are being rebuilt or repaired. That small sampling of aircraft would not make a good statistical analysis of the airworthiness of the entire Alaskan general aviation fleet.

So sad, but over half the planes in Alaska need to have serious overhauls or be sent to the scrap heap. I shudder every time I drive by Merril Field and look at those junk heaps sitting there.
