Fish Hatchery Prepares for the 2012 Fishing SeasonKing salmon, Arctic char, silvers and rainbows prepare to get released in the springThe new sport fish hatchery in Anchorage said it's stocks of king salmon, silvers, rainbows and Arctic char are growing well and will be ready for release this spring. Monday hatchery workers were clipping the fins of over 200,000 king salmon so they can be distinguished from wild stock when they are released. Tuesday the kings will be pumped through a special tube from the start-up tanks into larger tanks where electronic feeders make sure they eat every 20 minutes. The new facility can also control the lighting and heating of the tanks. Workers at the hatchery said the new building has made their job a lot easier because the old facility was outdoors, where they had to fight off icing conditions, ducks and magpies. King salmon are not the only fish thriving at the hatchery. When break-up begins the fish – including 1.9-million king salmon – will be released into lakes and rivers across the state including Deception and Crooked Creeks.
