ANCHORAGE - The Anchorage Fire Department is giving the public a chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at what firefighters do on a daily basis.

In preparation for their open house this weekend, firefighters put members of the media through different drills this afternoon at their training center.

Crews lit a couch on fire to demonstrate how quickly flames can spread, then volunteers helped put out the fire.

Firefighters say it's important for people to understand fire safety.

"We consider it one of the most important parts of our job. We honestly and truly believe if we can educate the public on how to be safe in their everyday lives, then that will save more lives than we ever could,” said Anchorage Firefighter and EMT Chris Kiewik.

The Anchorage Fire Department's open house is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the training center on Airport Heights.

There will be drills that kids can participate in and a free barbeque.
