Fire Island Wind Turbines Preparing for PowerWind farm near to coming onlineFIRE ISLAND - If you’ve flown over Fire Island lately you may have noticed that the landscape is changing quickly. Huge wind turbines are popping up as workers prepare to harness the natural energy of the wind to produce electricity. Cook Inlet Regional Corporation says after years of delays the project is on the fast track and will actually be generating electricity by the end of September. Chugach Electric has agreed to buy it. Even though the project will supply only about 4 percent of the utility’s needs, there is still room to grow. CIRI is installing 11 wind turbines now but if Chugach or other electric utilities agree to buy more power they could install an additional 22 turbines and triple their output. |

I've heard that one potential enviromental issue is that in other locations where these wind turbines operate many birds end up shreaded by the spining props. Green energy gone haywire?
