Guns In Bars: Legal But Must Be UnloadedThe recent double homicide outside JJ's Cocktail Lounge has many people questioning whether it's legal to carry a gun into a bar. The answer is yes, as long as the gun is unloaded.
A recent double homicide outside a Muldoon bar is raising some questions about whether it is legal to carry a gun into a bar. For most people the answer is yes.
Felons cannot carry firearms but the average person who obtains a gun legally may bring a gun almost anywhere, even into a bar, provided it is unloaded. And they can keep it concealed since there is no longer a requirement to get a concealed weapons permit to carry a concealed weapon. Anchorage police say the legal definition of “loaded” is that there is no bullet or cartridge inside the chamber or barrel ready to shoot. But it is okay to have ammunition on your person. It is also okay to drink with the weapon on your person provided you do not become “impaired” by alcohol. Police say that technically the law allows unloaded guns in bars but they certainly discourage it. They also say that individual establishments can ban weapons if they want to and some do. Chilkoot Charlie's is one bar that posts the “no guns” policy prominently near the entrance. And while even some gun owners say alcohol and guns should never mix, Alaska law makes it legal. |

EXACTLY! I carry concealed 100% of the time if I choose, other than places where a metal detector would be an issue (courthouse, koots, etc). I carry for self defense against those who couldn't care less about laws.

So if it WERE made illegal to carry guns into bars, would that stop criminals from doing so? For some reason I always thought that the reason they are criminals is because they don't obey laws..... Just saying.

Is Lt Dave Parker an authority? I've had an APD cop tell me (with a straight face) that ANY marijuana possession is illegal in Alaska, and we all know better than THAT! Cops have opinions, but at the end of the day, they do not make or interpret the laws, they only enforce what they THINK is right. That's where courts and judges come in, to correctly handle the aftermath of an arrest or charge. Our APD cops include rapists, illegal aliens, drunk drivers, and of course chief Mew who recently rear ended someone because he was texting. Remember the 2 cops who forced their way into the reporter's apartment without a warrant? Sooo...... use your OWN brain and look up the actual Alaska Statutes. Don't trust a news report, or a cop, or a gun dealer, or a bar owner. And here's one more opinion- responsible gun owners should be able to carry anywhere, anytime. But exactly how do we decide which ones are responsible? Thus- everybody (who legally can) carrys, or nobody does.

I called KTVA this AM and told them they were totally wrong about the information their reporter passed on re carrying guns in a bar (vs a restaurant that also serves alcohol)and that you CAN NOT consume alcohol when you are carrying a weapon. Loaded vs unloaded is not an issue here. I don't think my comments registered with the KTVA rep...So much for 'accurate reporting' by KTVA...!! Lt. Dave Parker, APD would straighten out KTVA's misrepresentation by KTVA in a flash!!

This article is full of imprecisions that could get people into serious trouble. Ask your local police dept. or the State Troopers for the actual regulations. You may NOT--repeat: NOT--carry concealed or otherwise in an establishment where alcohol is sold and consumed, except for restaurants where alcohol is served, but then the person who carries a weapon is not allowed to drink any alcoholic beverage.

I just went through the Alaska concealed carry class three weeks ago. Lt. Dave Parker spoke at our class and according to him, you can carry in a place that serves drinks and food, and not just a bar. But, you can not drink if you are carry your firearm, not even a sip. He did not mention loaded or unloaded firearms. I would tend to go with Lt Dave, not a news atricle

To Midgardian, they are not "clips" they are magazines. The only gun that I know of that uses a "clip" is the M1 Garand, a WWII era semi auto rifle.

Ms.Maxwell needs to look at Ak state regs. They state no firearms when drinking. Also no guns in bars unless one is a law enfforcement officer.

Who is the "Anchorage Police" that was quoted in this article? I do believe that someone was smoking something when these statements were made.

Just for stupid people, there should be a law against bringing a gun into a bar. If you're bringing a gun to a bar, your not going there to have a good time and socialize, you're going there planning to be in trouble. Why would you bring one to a movie theater? Wait.....I dont even want to know. Plain and simple, if you're bringing a gun into any public place other than a shooting range or a repair place, then you're part of the problem, not part of the solution.

So, no bullet in the chamber. What about semi-auto pistols? Do the clips need to be removed

So amongst other things, the KTVA author of this article suggests that outlawing guns in bars should be the law and the owner of "Wild West Guns" in Anchorage evidently supports this? His statement is that, "No one has guns in bars" so you don't need to protect yourself there because everyone knows that "alcohol and guns don't mix". What a completely slanted article! And with two seemingly random "residents" who agree that the current laws are “animal backwards” and “hard to enforce”, I have to ask…….where is the unbiased reporting at KTVA? This is more of a persuasive essay than anything else! KTVA, we’re not buying into your slanted “reporting”!
