A recent double homicide outside a Muldoon bar is raising some questions about whether it is legal to carry a gun into a bar. For most people the answer is yes.
Felons cannot carry firearms but the average person who obtains a gun legally may bring a gun almost anywhere, even into a bar, provided it is unloaded. And they can keep it concealed since there is no longer a requirement to get a concealed weapons permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Anchorage police say the legal definition of “loaded” is that there is no bullet or cartridge inside the chamber or barrel ready to shoot. But it is okay to have ammunition on your person. It is also okay to drink with the weapon on your person provided you do not become “impaired” by alcohol.
Police say that technically the law allows unloaded guns in bars but they certainly discourage it. They also say that individual establishments can ban weapons if they want to and some do.
Chilkoot Charlie's is one bar that posts the “no guns” policy prominently near the entrance.
And while even some gun owners say alcohol and guns should never mix, Alaska law makes it legal.
