Feds to Retry Pete Kott, Vic Kohring on Corruption Charges

Both former lawmakers won appeals on grounds that the prosecution tainted the original trials in 2007 after it failed to turn over evidence that may have helped the defendants.

The federal government is moving forward with new trials for former Alaska lawmakers Vic Kohring and Pete Kott.

Prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's office in Anchorage made the announcement following a hearing for Kohring's retrial on corruption charges Monday.

Both Kohring and former House Speaker Pete Kott won appeals with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on grounds that the prosecution tainted the original trials in 2007 after it failed to turn over evidence that may have helped the defendants.

The star witness in both cases, former Veco CEO Bill Allen, testified that the lawmakers took bribes from him in exchange for oil tax votes.

Allen's testimony was discredited in the trial of former U.S. Senator Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, after allegations of favoritism from federal prosecutors.

Kohring's new trial is set for Aug. 8; a new trial date for Kott has not yet been set.

Allen's testimony wasnt discredited. The prosecution simply failed to make all of its evidence avilable. We heard them on tape. Nothing can change that.
