The family of an Alaska-based airman killed Wednesday in Afghanistan has identified the deceased as Maj. David L. Brodeur.

Assigned to the 11th Air Force at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, Brodeur was one of nine Americans who died following a shooting incident in Afghanistan's capital city of Kabul; casualties included eight U.S. troops and one civilian contractor.

Reports indicate that a veteran Afghan military pilot despondent over money issues opened fire at a Kabul airport after an argument.

Brodeur, of Auburn, Massachusetts, was deployed as an advisor to the Afghan Command and Control Center under NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan, according to his wife, Susan Brodeur.

Her husband had been deployed since February.

In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a college fund for the Brodeur children for members of the community who wish to donate to the family.

To make a donation contact the Air Warrior Courage Foundation and annotate “Maj David Brodeur 529 College Fund.”
