Three Fairbanks residents are being charged, as of January 23, with an additional charge – conspiracy to kill federal officers.

Francis Schaeffer Cox, 27, Coleman L. Barney, 36, and Lonnie G. Vernon, 57, now face the possibility of life in prison.

Previously the Fairbanks residents had been charged with participating in a conspiracy to receive and possess unregistered prohibited weapons – including hand grenades, firearms and silencers. The indictment also includes criminal forfeiture accusations relating to multiple seized firearms, silencers and destructive devices.

Cox has been charged with soliciting Barney and Vernon to murder federal officers. He was also indicted of possessing unregistered illegal weapons, including a machine gun and silencer, and for unlawfully making a silencer.

Cox and Barney have both been previously charged with possessing illegal hand grenades and other destructive devises, as well as, carrying a firearm during a crime of violence.

The defendents are currently in custody and waiting for their February 6 trial.

Sentencing will be based upon the seriousness of the crimes committed and prior criminal history.
