FAIRBANKS - Fairbanks police are still looking for a suspect accused of killing a man in a downtown apartment last month.

Fairbanks resident Cornelius Everett Jr., 19, was indicted Wednesday on a count of second-degree murder. A no-bail warrant was issued for his arrest.

The warrant describes him as a 5-foot-11 Native man who weighs about 160 pounds. His last known address is in the University West neighborhood.

Everett is accused of killing Johnson Griffin, 55, in the victim’s Northward Building apartment in late June.

Police found Griffin’s body during a welfare check of his apartment June 27 and did not immediately classify the case as a homicide. A medical examiner later concluded he died from blunt force trauma to the chest, which caused severe internal bleeding.

Everett was identified as a suspect through witness statements and two interviews.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Peyton Merideth at 450-6553.

Contact staff writer Sam Friedman at 459-7545.
