FAIRBANKS — The Fairbanks North Star School District this week reduced one-year expulsions to 10-day suspensions for three Randy Smith middle school students who failed to tell authorities another student had a gun on campus, according to the father of one of the students.

The three students and the student who brought the gun had been facing the same penalty based on a school district policy against aiding or abetting the breaking of school rules.

The school district does not comment publicly on student discipline issues for confidentiality reasons, district spokesman Bill Bailey said.

Regan Skogstad, the father of one of the students, said Wednesday his son returned to school Tuesday and two other students who failed to tell authorities about the gun also had the expulsions reduced to 10-day suspensions.

Skogstad described the resolution as “a kind of a plea agreement.” He said he was not familiar with the specifics of the other two cases or any details about the final consequence for the student who brought the gun to campus.

Randy Smith Middle School went into a lockdown on the morning of Sept. 29, when a student reported another student had been showing off a black-powder pistol on the school bus.

The gun was found within minutes in the student’s locker and school officials said after the incident that the student had not intended to hurt anybody with it.

Whats so surprising about this? With all the hard core violence on T.V. and Movies, what do you think we are teaching our children? Its promoted with Video games, DVD's and kids think its cool.UNTIL parents start controling what the kids do, watch and are given a good proper foundation in life, things will just get worse. Problem is the parents are not the only ones to blame, the society as a whole is pretty rotten any more. No morals, principals, and the news is nothing but politicians stealing, lieing and cheating. What an example for children. If the society dosen't do a 90 degree turn around, the world is doomed.
