More than a year later, day of remembrance brings Alaskans together

ANCHORAGE - It has been ayear since a tsunami and magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck Japan, a day many Alaskans still remember.

More than 400 people attended the "Alaska drums for Japan – a day of remembrance" event Saturday at Northwood Elementary School.

The event was held to honor those who lost their lives in the tsunami and to help raise money for relief efforts.

Alaskans who volunteered in the aftermath also shared their personal experiences.

“It’s very important that the American people don't forget what happened there, and continue to show support through however donations or spending time to keep the awareness, keep an important even in the minds of the people of America,” said Seth Russell, who volunteered in Japan.”

“We're trying to recognize our residents lost, Alaska's residents lost as well,” said Shin Suzuki of the Japan Relief Fund of Alaska.
