ANCHORAGE—The Anchorage district attorney's office says it is asking a judge to increase by tenfold the bail amount for a local cab driver accused of raping a woman he picked up in the Ship Creek area.
Prosecutors claim a magistrate should have set a much higher bail amount than the $5,000 originally handed down for Chidiebere Nwokorie, a 43-year-oldYellow Cab driver who has been charged with three counts of sexual assault after police say he picked up a woman walking alone last week and took her to a secluded area trying to rape her.  Assistant district attorney Brittany Dunlop says a combination of public outcry and an assessment by many, including officers from the group Standing Together Against Rape, that the original bail amount was too low, caused her office to seek the higher bail amount of $50,000.
The issue will be addressed Wednesday. Nwokorie remains out on bond, but he will have to appear in court for two separate hearings.
