It was a maximum sentence on Monday for Kenneth Dion, the man convicted of raping and murdering UAA student Bonnie Craig more than 17 years ago.

Dion was sentenced to 124 years for abducting the 18 year old on her way to school and driving her to McHugh Creek where she was raped and murdered. Craig’s body was found floating in the water.

The murder went unsolved until five years ago when a DNA match was made between Dion and the crime scene. An Anchorage jury convicted Dion of first-degree murder and sexual assault last year.

The judge agreed to give Dion the maximum sentence under the law but he also said Dion should have the opportunity for parole. Dion is 42 years old and would be in his 80s, if released

Craig’s mother, Karen Foster, said she was happy with the sentence and glad that the “final chapter” on the case had ended.
