Decomposing Body Discovered Near Elmore Road, Anchorage Police HQ

Anchorage police are investigating the death of a person whose body was discovered just down the road from their East Anchorage headquarters in the Little Campbell Creek area.

While conducting a routine survey of reds and Chinooks Monday afternoon, two Alaska Department of Fish & Game technicians discovered the body. The employees had also spotted three brown bears in the area earlier and were carrying shotguns for protection.

According to police, the body’s remains are so indistinguishable that they are unable to identify the gender, let alone identify the person at this time.

“At this point we don't have any missing persons reports that actually match up,” said Lt. Dave Parker, an Anchorage Police Department spokesperson.

Crime scene investigators and patrol officers spent the afternoon combing the area for clues.

The medical examiner's office will examine bug larvae on the body in an attempt to determine how long the body had been in North Fork Campbell Creek.

Whether the death was the result of foul play, natural causes or related to area brown bears is unknown. Police also do not yet know if the person was homeless but are searching for clues.
This is the first body found in the area this year, however, other dead bodies were found west of the Little Campbell Creek area, toward the Lake Otis and Tudor area of the creek.
