In day five of the Kuskokwim flooding, Crooked Creek leadership declares it as a disaster.

Water levels in the village have dropped about four feet in the community, revealing some of the damage.

Homes have been lifted off their foundations and some crushed by the ice.  However, the full extent remains unknown because many roads, bridges and homes are still underwater.

The ice has cleared out from in front of the village, but is still jammed in the river just below Crooked Creek.  New fears are arising as more ice has been spotted coming from further up the Kuskokwim.

Some were worried of a possible fuel leak, as the high water and ice tipped tanks over.

Karl Edwards with Homeland Security and Emergency Management said, “There was report of a possible fuel spill.  Not sure, we couldn’t see anything as we flew up there.  There are tanks and all sorts of stuff floating in the water.  Department of Environmental Conservation will be on scene, they can take a look.  Also Donlin Creek Mine has offered to respond with hazmat I was informed.  So they are going to assess that and see if it is actual, or got a whiff of something.”

Residents have taken shelter at the Donlin Creek campsite as well as the school that sits far above water levels in Crooked Creek.

Donations are pouring in from surrounding communities, as well as food and much needed clothing.
