ANCHORAGE - Anchorage police say don't even think about drinking and driving over the four-day thanksgiving weekend.

Thanks to a grant, APD will have extra officers out on the streets looking for incidents of driving under the influence.

Police are encouraging citizens who observe apparent DUIs to use their cell phones to report them. They also say friends should be looking out for each other at gatherings.

"It’s a responsibility of the individual but certainly the person that's hosting the party,” said Officer Steven Buchta. “You know, keep track of them. If you can arrange rides ahead of time, that's great. The cab companies are very cooperative with these issues; they're aware of the issues. They want to keep the streets safe and they're on board with us."

Police say they've done their best to push the don't drink and drive message through public service announcements, but they say that people whose judgment is impaired by substance abuse might be careless anyway.
