According to Bicycle Commuters of Anchorage, the State Dept. of Transportation removed a bike in memory of a fallen cyclist because it was not DOT compliant.

William Curry, Jr., was killed April 5 when a car struck his bicycle.

The Bicycle Community of Anchorage has since been mourning the loss of Curry and set up a memorial, Ghost Bike, at the intersection of Tudor and C Street.

But the memorial was taken down—for safety reasons, the group says it was told by state transportation officials.

The BCA is currently working with the Department of Transportation on getting a new memorial up by April 15, when Curry was expected to ride.

Desecration of memorials is now a function of the DOT? How about yanking all those illegal signs from the elections? Better yet lets reduce our taxes by reducing them!!!

By "not DOT compliant", do they mean the bike had no reflectors? No Brakes? What's the diff' if it's just parked there, not being ridden?

As a sister that lost her brother to a car vs bicycle accident, I know the pain the family is experiencing.. I am so sorry for your loss. As for the DOT, can't you see that these bikes are GREAT reminders to drive safely, lives are at stake.

I don't suppose any local news organizations will ever tell us whether charges will be filed against the driver?

What was the safety issue? It was out of the street, didn't block the view. I recognized it right away as a ghost bike and I'm only visiting the area. My condolences to the family...

Why was this memorial singled out when that pile of rocks and sticks has been out on the Glen forever? The ghost bike therory is to make car drivers more aware of bikes especialy at that busy intersection. RIP my friend

Every day on the Glenn, I see multiple memorials from an accident that happened almost 10 years ago. DOT seems not to have a problem with those memorials.

Interesting, DOT did not remove the rogue political signs in road right away during recent election, however, the ghost bike removal was priority. What is up with that?wasD
